Sump Pump Common Problems and FAQ
Problem: My sump pump is freezing.
Answer: This will happen during the winter because the lines freeze outside your home and shuts down the sump pump; this should be repaired right away.
Problem: If the outdoor pipe freezes will the sump pump burn up out?
Answer: Not if it’s a newer model, they have thermal protection for the motor. If the motor gets too hot, the sump pump motor should shut itself down.
What is the right size sump pump?
A 1/3 horsepower pump is usually enough but 1/2 horsepower pump is best.
Should I clean the filter in my sump pump?
Sump pumps don’t have a filter; they use screens where the water enters the sump pump; these can clog.
Where does the water from a sump pump drain to?
Make sure it’s at least 20 feet away so water from the sump pump drains away from your house, and your neighbor’s house and property.
What kind of electrical circuit does a sump pump use?
Usually a standard 15-amp, 110-volt, three-pronged grounded electrical outlet, and make sure to install a ground fault interrupter (GFI) for your family’s safety.
How long should a sump pump last?
It’s not uncommon for the newer sump pumps to last for at least 5 years with proper maintenance. We always recommend replacing the switch and float at least every two years.
Problem: My sump pump will stop running: the float in the sump pump won’t shut down, and you probably need a new switch.
Answer: Call us and we’ll fix this right away so the pump doesn’t burn up.
